Playing With URL Structures for Better SEO
I don’t know how often people play with their URL structure for better SEO, changing the URL structure surely helps. Now, let me just give my personal thoughts about the importance of URL structures and some ideas to improve SERP rankings of your blog post or webpage.
Before I say anything, I should say this; The complete review presented here applies mainly to Google, this can apply to other’s too but I cannot guarantee the results. Let me explain you why. Optimizing a page in search engines does not mean optimizing it to all the search engines. Most often the search results for a particular keyword search done in different search engines always varies. This is because of the reason of fact that different Search engines use different search algorithms and they are often updated as well. So nobody can guarantee the best results for a particular strategy.
Now, here we go…
1:Google likes organized URL’s when compared with unorganized ones!! Let’s consider an example where you write about “Fish Hunting”, URL’s like http://www.example.com/12/asdsa.html or http://www.example.com/ads/87/jsdkhas.html can be confusing when compared to http://www.example.com/articles/fish-hunting.html. This type of URL’s keep both users and Search engines more comfortable.
2:Make sure that most important keywords are placed in the URL structure of your article. Now, consider URL of the article mentioned above “Fish Hunting” i.e http://www.example.com/fish-hunting.html , the URL clearly shows the important keywords mentioned in the title of your article, this type of structure makes both users and search engines understand what the page is about. Note: Don’t use too many keywords in your URL structure as it is often considered as spam.
3:Creating a short directory structure is always prescribed when compared to longer ones!! Here is an example, its always good to use “http://www.example.com/fish-hunting.html” than “http://www.example.com/category/sub-category/fish-hunting.html” for an article that is about “fish hunting”.
4:Last but not the least, make sure that your URL does not pop-out 404 error page when somebody navigates to odd URL’s in your blog or website. You can make a check to see if your URL show all the articles that are under “category” section when the following URL http://www.example.com/category/ is used; if not try to make a redirect to a particular categories page if possible.
Following the above mentioned points should improve the SEO of your site or blog to some extent. Hope this article helped, any comments and suggestions are welcome.
